Tonkatsu Daiki – New Tonkatsu Restaurant Hailing from Osaka

Tonkatsu is easily one of my favorite Japanese comfort foods, right alongside crispy tempura and steaming bowls of ramen. So, naturally, I had to check out Tonkatsu Daiki, a newcomer to the bustling Takashimaya Shopping Centre. Standing out here is no easy feat—especially with three other established tonkatsu restaurants competing under the same roof.

Specializing strictly in tonkatsu, their menu is refreshingly compact with just four offerings: Rosu Tonkatsu, Hire Tonkatsu, Premium Ebi Katsu, and Rosu Katsu Curry. I always appreciate a focused menu, as it usually signals that a kitchen has mastered its signature craft.

I ordered the Classic Rosu Katsu Set ($29++) paired with a cold Mugicha ($5), a traditional roasted barley tea. When the platter arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by the generous portion size for a 150g cutlet. The set came complete with miso soup and an array of salts and dip sauces to customize each bite.

Unfortunately, my first bite fell flat. I expected a melt-in-your-mouth experience, but the pork was surprisingly dry and a tad bland. Dip sauces and salt quickly became essential to bring out any real flavor. While the rendered fatty edge offered a lovely, tender richness, the breading was a major letdown—soggy instead of golden and crisp. Bizarrely, my friend’s cutlet had a beautifully satisfying crunch, revealing a frustrating inconsistency in the kitchen’s execution.

The highlight of the meal, however, was the Miso Soup. It was absolute perfection. Rich, hearty, and deeply savory, it turned out to be Tonjiru—a traditional variation packed with tender pork belly and earthy root vegetables. It was the undeniable saving grace of the dish.

Where Tonkatsu Daiki truly shines is its captivating atmosphere. The entrance is cleverly styled like an Osaka subway station, complete with a Midosuji Line map and bilingual train announcements playing in the background. Inside, the dim lighting, cozy tatami seating, and iconic visuals of Shinsaibashi’s Glico Man transport you straight to the heart of Osaka.
