Chicken rice is synonymous with being one of Singapore’s national dishes. There are hundreds of chicken rice stalls located all around the island. Some of them have become famous enough. Chicken rice is one of Singapore’s iconic national dishes, and you’ll find hundreds of stalls serving it across the island. A few have even grown into popular chains — yes, I’m looking at you, Tian Tian and Boon Tong Kee.
Like many chain outlets, I’ve noticed that their quality is often best at the original location. Yishun 925 Chicken Rice is a perfect example. Their flagship outlet in Yishun consistently draws long queues during lunch hour.

When I visited, there was already a queue forming, as expected during peak lunch time. I ordered the Chicken Drumstick Rice ($5) and waited about 15 minutes for it to arrive. I was pleasantly surprised by the price — chicken drumsticks are usually more expensive since they’re such a tender cut. Still, with food prices rising these days, I wasn’t about to complain.

The moment the plate reached my table, I was hit by the rich, fragrant aroma of pandan. The rice had a perfect balance — somewhere between moist and fluffy — and was packed with deep flavour from the pandan leaves and chicken stock. Once I poured the savoury chicken gravy over it, the rice became utterly delicious. Many say the rice is the star of any chicken rice dish, and I have to agree: Yishun 925’s version impressed me with both its texture and taste.
The chicken itself was superb. The skin was beautifully glistening, while the meat was succulent and juicy. It was served cold, which is exactly how I love it. Paired with the rich chicken gravy, it was a match made in heaven. The meal also came with a portion of achar — the first time I’ve seen a chicken rice stall serve it this way. It was refreshingly crisp with a pleasant kick of heat that cut through the richness nicely. To finish, there was a comforting bowl of chicken soup, which helped balance the oiliness of the rice and chicken.

In my opinion, Yishun 925 Chicken Rice serves some of the best chicken rice on the north side of Singapore. With reasonable prices and truly delectable food, it’s easy to see why there’s always a queue. They’ve clearly earned their strong reputation, one delicious plate at a time.
