Located in the cozy neighbourhood of Shunfu lies a classic Char Kway Teow stall – Lai Heng Char Kway Teow. This stall’s unique selling point is that it pairs Char Kway Teow with Otah. I’m not a fan of spicy food, so I ordered my Char Kway Teow without chilli.
Lai Heng’s Char Kway Teow comes in 3 portions – $3, $4 and $5. As soon as the dish arrived, I could immediately smell the fragrance of the noodles. Having opted for the $4 option, I was taken aback by the generous servings of the ingredients. The plate had beansprouts, leafy vegetables, fish cakes, hum(cockles) and lap cheong(chinese sausage). Out of all the ingredients, my favourite one was the lap cheong and I was delighted that they gave a healthy serving of it.
What I loved best about the Char Kway Teow was its balance of salty and sweet flavours.I’m guessing they added some sort of sweet sauce to the dish. This created an umami flavour and I couldn’t stop devouring it. I have tasted other Char Kway Teow throughout Singapore but so far this remains my favourite.
Lai Heng has 2 outlets, one at Shunfu Mart and one at Sembawang Hills Food Centre. This has been a satisfying meal and I’ll definitely try to visit its Sembawang outlet to taste whether there’s any difference between its Shunfu and Sembawang outlet.
