The saying “East Side is best side” rings true. I went to Changi Village hawker centre and had the opportunity to eat their famous Hokkien Mee. The portions come in three sizes:
- $5 for small,
- $6 for medium
- $8 for large.
I opted for the small one, but was pleasantly surprised by the generous serving of noodles. For people who are unfamiliar with Hokkien Mee, it is stir fried noodles. The Hokkien Mee came with small slices of pork belly, eggs, squid, prawns, and a splash of sambal chilli on the side.
The noodles had a fragrant aroma and I could taste the “wok hei” on the first bite. While the noodles were a bit dry for my preference, I enjoyed the overall meal. On the first bite I could taste the “wok hei” of the noodles. The pork belly slices and squid were chewy and I loved how everything tasted even better when eaten together.
Overall, this is one of the better Hokkien Mees that I’ve had. The broth of the Hokkien Mee gives the noodles and ingredients an umami taste that I can’t forget. I will definitely compare it to other stalls across Singapore as I continue to explore Singapore’s diverse culinary offerings. After all, it’s always fun to explore different food stalls and try different versions of Hokkien Mee. “East side is best side” rings true, for now.
